Language for Life Professional Development Workshop

Product Description

A one day whole-school in-service gives your teachers the skills and materials they need to conduct Language for Life lessons straight away in the classroom.

Included in the cost is a pre and post PD consultation regarding how best to implement the program throughout the school.

Participant numbers are not capped, but they are limited to school staff. No outside participants are permitted without prior agreement.

LESSON DESCRIPTION
TOPIC 1: ‘THE UNIVERSALS’ Using quality literature, pupils are guided through the discovery of nouns, pronouns and verbs and learn a simple marking system that helps bring to light the connectedness of each element.Once ‘subject’ and ‘verb’ are understood, there then follow some lessons on agreement and tense, also using quality literature as a scaffold.

TOPIC 2: ‘THE REMAINING PARTS OF SPEECH’ The remaining major parts of speech are discovered and defined using the scaffolded marking system so that pupils gain the skill of not only identifying the parts of speech in what they hear and read, but being conscious of the interrelationships of words in utterances.

TOPIC 3: ‘PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER’ Phrases and clauses are defined and discovered using visual tools and referring back to the literature in the preceding chapters.Pupils also gain skill in using alphabetised reference materials and are guided through the separate parts of dictionaries.

TOPIC 4: ‘MORPHOLOGY IN DEPTH’ A truly in-depth morphological study can only be achieved if the parts of speech are known and if one can look words up in a dictionary. This last topic seeks to synthesize all previous knowledge and skills gained from the course to help build literacy based on the structure and content of word forms.
