On-Site Intensive Lessons
BOOST YOUR LITERACY LESSONS WITH ON-SITE INTENSIVES
Literacy and numeracy week has allowed us to successfully trial a rather wonderful new service. We call it ‘On-Site Intensives’.
WHAT IS IT?
An on-site intensive is a full or half day where Lyn Stone comes in and runs some highly focused spelling/grammar/punctuation lessons with the students.
Lyn will leave a raft of materials and activities that can be done to consolidate particular linguistic skill sets.
These sessions can also be preceded by running the formative spelling assessments recently authored here and grouping students into streams according to their particular knowledge gaps, with a view to effectively filling those gaps on the teaching day.
None of this is intended to replace the job that the teachers do, of course, but what we have observed in our recent trial sessions was this:
Novelty significantly focuses attention. Because Lyn wasn’t a familiar teacher, the students really paid attention and were engaged throughout the whole lesson.
Help-seeking behaviour is positively altered. The fact that students were briefed that these sessions were rare rocket-booster knowledge gap-fillers, they were more keen to come forward and ask for assistance knowing that they were not going to be judged for revealing any knowledge gaps. That’s not to say that this kind of judgement actually takes place, but it was more about their perception of the possible consequences of help-seeking.
