Establishing a base line for our students so that we can monitor progress and liaise with schools is a very important part of what we do.
We take regular, accurate snapshots of students’ current levels in:
We use up to date, standardised testing, normed for Australian schoolchildren.
What we don’t do
We do not use any form of running record or reading record commonly used in school systems. These are tests that have a student read a passage of writing while the tester writes down their impressions of their ‘reading behaviours’ and comes up with a ‘reading level’. Tests like these are subjective and inaccurate and do not properly inform the tester of what action to take. Many children in the lower levels of primary school manage to progress through these levels by simply guessing what the words are. This leads to late diagnosis of reading difficulties and wasted time.
If your child is being assessed in this way at school, please proceed with caution. The ‘level’ they are placed on is a very low quality way of assessing reading. Talk to us about booking some assessments that will tell you exactly what your child can and can’t do in literacy and numeracy.
If you need in-depth cognitive testing, that evaluates things like working memory, processing speed or rapid naming, we have contacts with many of the best educational psychologists in Victoria and we would be happy to refer you to them.
We also do not diagnose dyslexia, dyscalculia or dysgraphia, but we know people who can!
Do read this excellent article on the subject.
