Overview
Join Lyn Stone in Darwin for a focused, practical day on syntax and grammar, based on the Language for Life program. This Saturday Syntax Special is designed for teachers, leaders and tutors who want clear explanations, strong examples and routines that make grammar genuinely useful in reading and writing lessons.
Instead of vague labels and rules that do not transfer to real writing, we will work with authentic sentences and texts so that you can see exactly how grammar supports comprehension and composition.
Part 1. The parts of speech
Go beyond simple labels such as “a noun is a naming word” or “a verb is a doing word”. In this session you will learn how to define and teach each major word category and how each one interacts with others in real sentences.
We will cover:
Nouns
Determiners
Pronouns
Verbs
Adjectives
Adverbs
Prepositions
Conjunctions
You will see practical ways to:
Explain each category with precision
Show how words can shift category in context
Use examples that make sense to students
Connect parts of speech to sentence structure and writing
Part 2. How to use a dictionary
Are paper dictionaries obsolete. With sophisticated search engines and online dictionaries in our lives it can seem that way. In practice, both online and paper dictionaries are organised in much the same way, and many teachers and students are not using them to their full potential.
In this part of the workshop we will:
Unpack the structure and conventions of dictionaries
Explore guide words, headwords, abbreviations and pronunciation information
Look at how morphological information appears in entries
Design classroom activities that help students become confident dictionary users
Teachers consistently report that this section renews their interest in reference materials and gives them a clear path for building dictionary skills in their students.
What you receive
Participants will receive:
A PowerPoint presentation for classroom use
A manual containing printable worksheets for students
A suggested K to 6 scope and sequence for grammar and morphology
A certificate for 5.5 hours of self identified professional learning
You will leave with concrete plans for taking the mystery out of parts of speech, getting more from dictionaries and helping students break words into morphemes with confidence.
