Higher Education Literacy Partnership of Minnesota (HELP) WORD STUDY WEBINAR WITH LYN STONE

May 11, 2022 @ 8:00 am 5:00 pm UTC-5

What makes a word list a valuable tool or a waste of time? Lyn Stone is known for her insightful, practical approach to equipping students of all ages and abilities with the skills to understand and permanently store the written form of words. Her effective “4-Step Process” creates knowledge-building word lists that include spelling patterns, sentence construction, parts of speech, vocabulary, and more.

Stone will cover the dos and don’ts of word lists and give teachers  a wealth of resources to take back to their classrooms to supercharge their word-study lessons with creative, engaging teaching strategies.

Lyn Sone is an educational linguist and author who lives and works in Victoria, Australia, where she runs her consultancy and tutoring practice, Lifelong Literacy. She was awarded her linguistics degree at University College London and has worked in the field for more than 25 years. Stone has extensive classroom-teaching experience and regularly consults with schools to provide specialized literary education for groups of at-risk students, as well as training for their teachers. In addition, she produces research-informed professional development seminars for teachers and other education professionals.

Her three bestselling books, Spelling for Life, Language for Life, and Reading for Life have attracted worldwide acclaim. Reading for Lifeis required reading for all literacy coaches in the Groves Literacy Partnership program, impacting more than 8,000 students in public and independent schools in Minnesota’s Twin Cities metro area in 2021-’22.

“Stone’s book Reading for Life is a little treasure trove of reading topics. Whenever I want to share a quick insight or “how-to” tip with a colleague, it is my go-to resource. Stone makes complex things, such as linguistics and phonics, easy to understand.” Literacy Coach, Groves Learning Organization
