On six consecutive, UK time-zone-friendly occasions from May 19 to June 23 2022, Tom, Lyn, and Chris will deliver two 75 minute live talks each. Those talks will be recorded and made available to all participants.

All participants will then be automatically enrolled in an online version of this masterclass. In this online version, you will be able to see all the videos from the live events, you will have all the handouts and you will also be able to participate in quizzes and forums relating to the material. Access to this online course will continue for two weeks after the last presentation. The online course, including the recordings, will continue to be available to all who  missed the live version.

Knowing how to manage classrooms is the fundamental skill for any teacher. When students don’t behave in a way that helps them to flourish, they can’t succeed, by any success indicator you can imagine:

• academic results, 
• wellbeing, 
• mental health, 
• social mobility, 
• creativity etc. 

It  is astonishing therefore that behaviour management is often so poorly delivered in teacher preparation. 

Many teachers struggle with this aspect of their role. In Running the Room, Tom Bennett wrote a practical and authentic guide to what teachers need to do in order to optimise the behaviour of their students. It cuts right across the myths and dogma that have dominated education for decades. 

In his sessions, Tom will cover:

Talks 3 & 4 Lyn Stone Syntax, morphology and writing

Once Tom has set the stage for routines, norms and consequences in the classroom, what then can we turn our attention to? For this series, I’ve chosen syntax, morphology and writing.

I’m overjoyed to see how popular these concepts are in education, since so much of my work is focused on these very things.

In this unique, two-part talk, I kick off with a model of syntax that shows how parts of speech interact with one another to form grammatical utterances. You may have seen this model in my other works, but together, using principles of explicit instruction, we’ll rebuild that model in your mind so that you can explain it to others.

Next, we take a linguist’s view of the true nature of morphemes, and using demonstration lessons, travel, step by step, through sequences of instruction in morphology for all stages.

Finally, we come to writing: difficult to develop and even harder to assess. I answer the following questions:

• What are the key ingredients in writing proficiency?
• How do you teach those and how do you measure whether you’ve succeeded?
• What are the barriers to fluent, accurate writing and how do you overcome them?

Armed with this deeper and broader understanding of how the writing system works, prepare to dive into the wonderful Chris Such’s talks on reading, fluency and comprehension.

Session dates for Chris: 8pm-9:15pm (BST) Thursday June 16 & June 23 Talks 5 & 6 – Christopher Such: Evidence-Informed Principles for Developing Reading Fluency and Comprehension

No subject in education has quite the wealth of evidence from research as reading development. And yet the key messages from this research rarely reach the classroom. This fact provided the impetus for the creation of The Art and Science of Teaching Primary Reading, a book authored by experienced primary school teacher and school leader, Chris Such. Across two sessions, Chris will guide course participants through the following aspects of reading fluency and comprehension:+ Frameworks for understanding reading+ English orthography and its relationship to reading+ What reading fluency is and what evidence and experience suggest about how it can be developed+ The elements of language comprehension that support reading comprehension, including vocabulary, background knowledge, text structure and sentence structure+ The difference between comprehension strategies and comprehension skills+ How to enhance whole-class reading through shared exploration of text and rich discussion

Participants will receive:

• Session handouts
• Automatic enrolment on the online version with two weeks access including the recording of the session
• A certificate for 7.5 hours of elective professional learning (upon completion of the webinar series and/or the online version)
