Teaching Phonics

Though some opponents of structured literacy would have one believe that we say phonics is the only ingredient in teaching reading, this section is not shy in emphasizing the importance of good phonics teaching. Here, we offer a method of curing the fatal habit of word-level guessing and picture-cueing and tackle the tricky world of vowels and their representation in print. The issue of ‘sight words’, and how phonics can be used to place deep-structure orthographic patterns in memory is explored, as well as teaching syllabification.
