Teaching Phonological Awareness

For typically developing learners, high-quality literacy instruction will give sufficient practice in and development of phonological awareness (PA). This section lists a range of techniques to use if a child is struggling with literacy due to low PA. It contains guidance on raising a student’s conscious awareness of the position of the articulators in the speech mechanism when producing sound, as well as a fool-proof way of teaching how to count syllables. It also suggests devoting instructional time to increasingly complex exercises in sound manipulation and sound tracking in words.
